The All-New Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class Unveiled
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new electric G-Class, officially named the G 580 with EQ Technology. This vehicle represents a unique fusion of the traditional G-Class design with progressive electric technology. Here’s a closer look at what the 2025 G 580 has to offer.
Tradition Meets Technology
The G 580 maintains the iconic ladder frame design that the G-Class is known for, combined with modern electric technology. It features selectable LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction, independent front suspension, and a solid rear axle, ensuring it retains its off-road capabilities.
High-Voltage Power
The vehicle is powered by a 116-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame, providing a low centre of gravity. The battery is housed in a torsion-resistant casing to protect it from water and dirt intrusion. Underbody protection made from a mix of materials, including carbon, ensures the battery remains safe during off-road adventures.
Impressive Performance
The G 580 is equipped with four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels. These motors are integrated into the ladder frame and produce a combined output of 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque. Virtual differential locks through torque vectoring enhance its off-road prowess.
Innovative Off-Road Features
The G 580 introduces several innovative off-road features, making it a standout in its class. One of the most exciting is the G-TURN function, which allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot, performing up to two complete turns. This feature is particularly useful for maneuvering in tight spaces or avoiding obstacles on off-road trails. The vehicle achieves this by rotating the wheels on one side in the opposite direction of those on the other side. Activation of G-TURN requires the vehicle to be stationary with specific settings engaged.
Another notable feature is G-STEERING, which significantly reduces the turning circle by controlling the drive torque at each individual wheel, enabling the vehicle to pivot around the inside rear wheel. This function can eliminate the need for multi-point turns in tight spots, enhancing maneuverability on sharp bends and narrow paths.

This function can eliminate the need for multi-point turns in tight spots, enhancing maneuverability on sharp bends and narrow paths.
The intelligent off-road crawl function acts like cruise control for off-road driving. It maintains a pre-set speed on loose surfaces, allowing drivers to focus on steering and navigating obstacles. This function offers three speed settings: slow crawl, variable crawl, and fast crawl, each tailored to different off-road conditions. This feature is automatically active when the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction is engaged, and drivers can adjust the speed using steering wheel controls.
Enhanced Driving Experience
The G-ROAR sound experience is designed to provide an impressive acoustic backdrop for the electric G-Class. Inspired by the traditional G-Class combustion engine sounds, G-ROAR delivers deep, powerful tones that vary depending on the driving mode selected. The sound is more restrained in “Comfort” mode and becomes more pronounced and emotional in “Sport” mode. Additional sounds, such as an “aura” sound when approaching the vehicle and various “event” sounds for actions like locking and unlocking the doors, enhance the overall driving experience.
Advanced Technology
The G 580 comes with a redesigned OFFROAD COCKPIT, offering a comprehensive digital off-road experience. This system provides real-time data relevant to off-road driving, displayed on both the driver and central multimedia displays. Features include an artificial horizon, compass, altitude, steering angle, torque distribution, and tire pressure and temperature information.
The “transparent hood” function, utilizing the 360-degree camera, gives drivers a virtual view under the front of the vehicle. This helps in identifying obstacles that might not be visible from the driver’s seat, such as crests, embankments, and hollows. It can be activated through the off-road control centre or the multimedia display.
Safety and Assistance
Advanced safety and assistance systems are standard, supporting drivers in various conditions.
Exclusive Edition
For the 2025 model year, the electric G-Class will be available in Canada in the EDITION ONE special edition, featuring expanded standard equipment and unique design elements. The G 580 with EQ Technology is expected to arrive in Canada in the second half of 2024.
The all-new electric G-Class combines the rugged legacy of its predecessors with the latest in electric vehicle technology, promising a powerful and versatile addition to the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
