Mercedes-Benz eCall

Mercedes-Benz eCall is an advanced emergency call system launched in 2012. Since the introduction of Mercedes me in September 2014, eCall has become a standard feature in all Mercedes-Benz model series. This innovative system significantly enhances the safety features of Mercedes-Benz vehicles by providing rapid emergency response in critical situations.

eCall – Emergency SOS

The eCall system is designed for emergencies and accident scenarios. It allows drivers to initiate an emergency call by pressing the SOS button located on the vehicle’s roof control unit. In the event of an accident, the eCall is automatically activated if airbags are deployed or if the vehicle’s hazard sensors are triggered. The system has a 10-second response window after an accident; if there’s no response from the occupants, it automatically alerts the emergency call center. This center will then dispatch police and emergency medical services (EMS) to the exact location of the vehicle. Importantly, eCall can determine the number of passengers in the vehicle, allowing the EMS to prepare accordingly.

meCall – Breakdown and Information Calls

Apart from emergency situations, the meCall feature serves other important functions. By pressing the meCall (me) button, drivers can contact 24/7 emergency roadside assistance or reach out to Mercedes me connect support teams for general queries or technical support.

Additional Features and Services

Beyond these emergency and assistance services, Mercedes me connect (Mmc) offers a variety of other services to vehicle owners. These include, but are not limited to, remote engine start, remote door lock/unlock, Live Traffic service, vehicle location, geofencing, and tracking of stolen vehicles. While convertibles and roadsters come equipped with both meCall and eCall-SOS buttons, roadster models like the SL, SLC, and GT Roadster include Mmc services but lack remote start capability. In contrast, convertibles offer the full suite of Mmc services, including remote start.

System Effectiveness and Availability

The Mercedes-Benz emergency call function is crucial for promptly notifying rescue services post a severe crash. It provides essential information like the vehicle’s exact GPS position, the number of people in the vehicle (determined by the locked seat belts), and the direction of travel. All current Mercedes-Benz models are equipped with this system as a standard feature. The emergency call function is active and free of charge throughout the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. It can be manually activated by the driver to report observed accidents or health emergencies within the vehicle, like a heart attack.

Cross-Border Assistance

The meCall button’s functionality extends beyond local borders. For instance, pressing meCall in the United States connects the driver to the Canadian roadside assistance team or the Canadian Customer Assistance Center. In such cases, the Roadside Assistance deploys AAA services instead of CAA.

Mercedes-Benz eCall is a testament to the brand’s commitment to safety and customer care. This system not only provides peace of mind but also ensures that help is just a button press away in critical situations. The integration of eCall into all Mercedes-Benz models demonstrates the brand’s dedication to leveraging technology for enhanced safety and customer support.
